Avoiding Caller ID Spoofing Scams

Phone scammers often disguise their identity by using illegal spoofing techniques to send false information to your caller ID display. These techniques could potentially trick you into answering, as spoofers may use local area codes and numbers that look familiar. They may also impersonate a company you do business with, or even a government agency. Below are a few Do’s and Don’ts to help avoid these types of scams:

Don’t
• Don’t rely on caller ID
• Don’t give your personal, private or sensitive information to a caller
• Don’t provide your PIN or: one-time access codes to a caller, including authentication codes generated for Online Banking, Apple, Samsung, or Google Pay

Do
• Hang up and call First State Bank’s direct phone number or the number on the back of your debit card, even if it sounds legitimate
• Watch out for a false sense of urgency and scare tactics
• Avoid unusual payment methods
